In the near future, the members of two airline industry associations will no longer require passengers to identify as either male or female when they book flights, the groups announced Monday.

Airlines for America and the International Air Transport Association said their members will add "unspecified" and "undisclosed" to their gender options starting June 1, CNN reported. The change is meant to make air travel more inclusive for passengers.

"U.S. airlines value a culture of diversity and inclusion, both in the workplace and for our passengers, and we work hard each day to accommodate the needs of all travelers, while delivering a safe, secure and enjoyable flight experience," A4A said in a statement.

Advocacy groups representing transgender people praised the announcement.

"NCTE applauds the A4A for adding gender options that are reflective of the diversity of their passengers," Arli Christian, spokesperson for The National Center for Transgender Equality, told CNN in a statement. https://cnn.it/2txOxNu
