The American Petroleum Institute has formed a new coalition to urge for expanded offshore oil and gas drilling.
Explore Offshore is "a bipartisan coalition dedicated to safe and environmentally responsible access to our offshore energy resources to help supply affordable energy for American consumers, small businesses and manufacturers," API said in a statement.
More than 100 community organizations, associations, businesses and local leaders in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida have so far joined the coalition.
"Members of Explore Offshore are united in support for expanding access to America's offshore energy resources to meet growing demand, fortify our national security and provide stability for our country's families and small businesses," Virginia Petroleum Council Director Miles Morin said in a statement.
President Donald Trump has proposed expanding offshore oil drilling, although his administration was criticized for exempting Florida from its plans, allegedly at the urging of Florida Gov. Rick Scott.
Expanded drilling had drawn criticism from environmentalists and the tourism industry in coastal states, which fear more drilling will drive away tourists. https://bit.ly/2xRBJ9I
