Airlines for America is forecasting that 25.3 million people will take to the skies for the coming Thanksgiving holiday—the most since the beginning of the Great Recession in 2008.
The Thanksgiving travel period for airlines will run from Nov. 20 to Dec. 1, A4A said in a statement. The association expects the number of air travelers to increase 3 percent from the 24.5 million estimated 2014 Thanksgiving air travelers, averaging an additional 65,000 passengers per day.
The busiest travel days ranked in order will be Sunday, Nov. 29; Monday, Nov. 30; and Wednesday, Nov. 25. The lightest travel days will be Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27.
"As competition continues to boost schedules and drive down airfares in 2015, customers are seeing more opportunities to fly during the holiday season," A4A Vice President and Chief Economist John Heimlich said. "Airlines are taking delivery of new, larger aircraft to accommodate the increase in passengers."
As for people who will be traveling by car rather than plane, the automotive association AAA hasn't released its holiday travel forecast yet. However, Thanksgiving traffic has been increasing in recent years with more than 46 million travelers hitting the roads last year, which was the most since 2007, according to AAA figures.
