Four national bar associations are seeking a delay in the Senate conformation hearing for President-elect Donald Trump's choice for attorney general, saying that nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) failed to "adequately respond" to a questionnaire from lawmakers.
Sessions, a Trump supporter, has been a controversial pick because of what critics say is his poor track record on race relations. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to begin Sessions' conformation hearing Tuesday, but in letter to committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the four associations said the nominee omitted important information from a committee questionnaire he was supposed to fill out.
The groups said Sessions left out information on media interviews and speeches he gave while as a U.S. attorney and state attorney of Alabama; answers he provided to questionnaires from third parties; and awards he received from outside organizations.
"It appears Senator Sessions is unwilling or unable to make a comprehensive effort and provide a completed questionnaire to the committee," the groups said in the letter. "As organizations that represent the interests of a diverse group of attorneys, we are incredibly troubled by what appears to be a lack of transparency to this process on the part of the candidate."
The associations also said they were concerned with the short amount of time allotted for the hearings, which currently are scheduled to take place over two days.
The presidents of the National Bar Association, National Hispanic Bar Association, National Asian Pacific Bar Association and National LGBT Bar Association signed the letter. http://bit.ly/2i9couw
