BIO is keeping the same initials but not the same middle name.
The Biotechnology Industry Association officially rebranded as the Biotechnology Innovation Association Monday. The name change had been announced last year, but the organization didn't make the switch until recently.
In a statement, BIO CEO Jim Greenwood said the association's old name didn't adequately reflect what is taking place in the biotech industry.
"BIO's members are on the cutting-edge of science and we believe our new name will allow us to build upon our relationships, create new ones and provide our members with better educational and research opportunities," he said.
The switch from "industry" to "innovation" meant BIO was able to keep its existing logo, which prominently displays the association's initials. The group's website also was largely unchanged.
BIO is not the only large association to swap a middle name in recent months. The Consumer Electronics Association became the Consumer Technology Association in November.
