CEO DATELINE - Brewers Association cracks down on ‘offensive' beer labels

Beers with sexist and offensive labels will no longer be recognized at the Brewers Association's awards ceremonies and cannot use the recognition to advertise their products, the group announced Wednesday.
BA represents smaller, craft breweries. The group maintains a marketing and advertising code for members, and recently the association added the provision that beer advertising should not contain "sexually explicit, lewd, or demeaning" language or graphics that "reasonable adult consumers find inappropriate for consumer products offered to the public."
Members that violate the code with still be able to participate in BA's awards events, but they will not be recognized during the ceremonies, association CEO Bob Pease told industry news site Brewhound.
"If a brewery with an offensive name or label were to win an award, we would not read that name from the stage," Pease said.
Breweries in violation of the code also will not be able to use the awards to advertise their products. The new rules will not apply retroactively to past award winners.
Brewhound noted the industry is littered with past and present examples of sexually explicit beer labels, with "Panty Dropper" and "Thong Remover" among the milder labels.
