The Wells Fargo fraudulent accounts scandal will be a hot topic for credit union executives meeting in Washington, D.C., this week. The National Association of Federal Credit Unions kicked off its Congressional Caucus Monday. Other industries represented in fall fly-ins this week include senior living, electronic payments and vinyl.
Nearly 300 national organizations are coming together to support the fourth annual Rally for Medical Research Thursday on Capitol Hill. Fly-in participants will ask Congress to prioritize funding for the National Institutes of Health.
NAFCU CEO Dan Berger said the Wells Fargo situation taints the entire financial services industry and will make any reforms to the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau impossible. Credit unions and banks are often at odds, with banking groups wanting to revoke the tax-exempt status of credit unions.
Hundreds of NAFCU advocates will visit Hill offices today through Wednesday. About two dozen lawmakers are also scheduled to speak at the event, as well as CFPB Director Richard Cordray.
More than payment and technology industry leaders will meet with members of Congress and regulators this week as part of the Electronic Transactions Association Payments Fly-In. The group will host its inaugural FinTech Policy Forum on Thursday.
Other groups holding legislative conferences include Argentum—Expanding Senior Living, the Vinyl Institute, Growth Energy and the American Planning Association.
