The Internet Association has opened its first office in New York State and hired lobbyist John Olsen to run it, the New York Daily News recently reported.
The Internet Association was founded in 2012 by several large Internet businesses to advocate for the industry in Washington, D.C. The group opened an office in Sacramento, Calif., in 2014 to lobby California state lawmakers and hired a vice president of government affairs the following year to oversee lobbying activities in all 50 states.
In recent years, New York has seen a flurry of state legislation affecting tech companies, such as proposals for collecting sales taxes from online purchases and regulating ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. In a statement to the Daily News, Internet Association CEO Michael Beckerman said the new offices would allow the group "to engage on policies that create economic opportunities for businesses and middle class families in the Empire State."
Olsen was named executive director of the New York office, which will be based in the state capital of Albany. He previously was a lobbyist for Albany-based law firm Featherstonhaugh, Wiley & Clyne. http://nydn.us/2kFuSrZ
