A new trade group has launched to represent solar farms owned by groups of people.
The Coalition for Community Solar Access will work to expand access to clean energy through the expansion of community solar, according to a news release. Community solar refers to local solar facilities shared by individual community members, who receive credits on their electricity bills for their portion of the power produced.
"Community solar is the necessary next step to bringing solar to the majority of Americans for whom solar is not yet an option," CCSA Executive Director Jeff Cramer said. "We're meeting a growing need with a coordinated, collaborative approach that will help expand the American solar market benefitting both consumers and business."
CCSA's initial goal is to target several key states in 2016, including New York, Massachusetts and Maryland, to help grow community solar markets. It will work with legislators, regulators and utilities to develop policies and regulatory frameworks that support the industry.
Seven companies make up the association's founding members. CCSA currently has four staff and is based in Washington, D.C. www.communitysolaraccess.org
