Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America will soon stop funding a nonprofit group that helps people kick opioid addiction, with the group's former employees complaining of mismanagement, Politico reported Monday.
PhRMA will cease funding Addiction Policy Forum in 2020, according to the news site. The association provides about 90% of the group's revenue and had already cut its spending from $8.1 million to $6 million this year.
The trade group's decision comes amid reports that the Addiction Policy Forum had poorly managed funds it received. Politico spoke to eight current and former employees who complained that millions of dollars were spent on a K Street office, a now-empty call center, meetings and other projects. The group's executive director—Jessica Husley Nickel—denied the allegations.
Nickel told Politico that PhRMA's money was drying up because the group had received a three-year grant from the association, which is ending. For its part, a PhRMA spokesperson said "we are confident that the organization will remain at the forefront of efforts to save lives." https://politi.co/2OPqHHd
