Washington, D.C., residents engage in a lot of physical activity, and not just from walking because the Metro is broken all the time.
A new report by the American College of Sports Medicine ranked the greater D.C. area as the "fittest" metropolitan area in the U.S. Arlington and Alexandria, both in Virginia, were counted as part of D.C. for the purposes of the study.
ACSM's ninth-annual American Fitness Index compared the health habits of D.C.-area residents with the availability of parkland and public recreational facilities like swimming pools. The city topped the list in the 50 metropolitan areas studied, with Minneapolis coming in second and Denver ranking third.
"Our overarching goal is to offer communities and residents resources that can help them assess, plan and implement measures for a quality, healthier life," said Walter Thompson, chair of the ACSM committee that oversaw the report.
America's least healthy city? Indianapolis, where nearly a third of the population is obese. http://bit.ly/1WE8mwe
