Association at heart of gene patent case The U.S. Supreme Court will examine the legal issues surrounding the patentability of human genes today in a case pitting the Association for Molecular Pathology and other medical groups against the biotechnology industry. At issue are two patents held by Myriad Genetics on human genes that, when mutated, give women a high risk of getting breast or ovarian cancer, according to The New York Times. The patents give the company a monopoly on testing for the genes.
