Gas association settles with feds over furnace rule The federal government has dropped a rule that would have required high-efficiency furnaces in northern states, thanks to a challenge by the American Public Gas Association, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The new rule by the U.S. Department of Energy would have required new furnaces and boilers in northern states such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey to have an efficiency rating of 90 percent or more. APGA challenged the rule, arguing it would have driven up the price of gas furnaces and therefore forced many people to switch to electrical or kerosene heaters.
