The National Foreign Trade Council's website was attacked by malicious software possibly originating from Chinese-sponsored hackers, a Bethesda, Md.-based cybersecurity firm announced Wednesday.
In a blog post on its website, Fidelis Cybersecurity said it discovered evidence that malware used exclusively by Chinese state actors was used to target corporations involved in lobbying the U.S. government on foreign policy. Users who visited the NFTC website in late February and early March to register for a board of directors meeting may have inadvertently downloaded the software, which could be used to obtain information from their computers.
"NFTC members have been key participants in the dialogue around the composition of the new trade policy framework being formulated within the Trump administration," the firm said. http://bit.ly/2oakQzS
The announcement came a day before President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss a host of issues, including trade. Both NFTC and the FBI refused to comment on the alleged hack when contacted by reporters. The Chinese foreign ministry also refused to comment. http://reut.rs/2oJhkOB
