Three technology sector trade groups plan to file briefs in support of Apple as the company comes under increasing pressure by federal authorizes to unlock an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters, the tech news site re/code reported.
The Internet Association, Computer and Communications Industry Association and Intranet Infrastructure Coalition will argue FBI is going too far by asking Apple to design software to bypass iPhone encryption protections. The company says such software could be used to access the personal information of innocent people.
"In this case, a false choice is presented with privacy as one option and security as the other," Internet Association CEO Michael Beckerman said in a statement. "Encryption protects Americans and our infrastructure from countless daily attacks by those looking to do our nation harm. Strong encryption is security and safety online, and is a vital component of our national defenses."
In making its case, the FBI is relying on the All Writs Act, a 227-year-old law that basically gives federal judges the authority to compel people and companies to follow government orders.
The three associations argue in their briefs that the All Writs Act has been used before to compel companies to develop new technologies that could ultimately undermine their business models. http://on.recode.net/24DDleh
