Six association leaders have joined a new volunteer group created to advise the Trump administration on workforce policy.
The Workforce Policy Advisory Board was announced Wednesday by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and presidential adviser Ivanka Trump. The group's 25 members are a mix of business and labor leaders. Their terms last until July 2020.
The six association members are:
- Walter Bumphus, CEO, American Association of Community Colleges
- Tom Donohue, CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce
- Juanita Duggan, CEO, National Federation of Independent Business
- Scott Sanders, executive director, National Association of State Workforce Agencies
- Johnny Taylor, CEO, Society for Human Resource Management
- Jay Timmons, CEO, National Association of Manufacturers
"President Trump is the dynamic ally that our workforce has needed in the White House for decades," Ross said in a statement. "Under his guidance, the advisory board will work in coordination with the National Council for the American Worker to solve the pressing issues facing American workers and families each day."
The National Council for the American Workers was established last year to develop a national strategy for expanding job training and educational opportunities. The workforce policy board will complement that work by bringing "varied perspectives on workforce issues facing communities and businesses across the country, while raising awareness of multiple pathways for American workers to obtain family-sustaining careers," according to the Commerce Department.
In a statement, Timmons said, "manufacturers are in urgent need of more workers."
"Manufacturers strongly support the administration's efforts to address the workforce crisis, and I'm proud to represent our industry on the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board," he said.
Donohue, speaking for the Chamber, said he looks forward "to working with the administration and this impressive group of leaders to shape a national strategy to help close the skills gap and build a workforce that supports our robust economy."
