President Donald Trump climbed into the cab of a big rig on the White House grounds Thursday as part of a meeting with leaders of the American Trucking Associations, including CEO Chris Spear.
The event with Spear, ATA board members and professional truck drivers was one of a number of meetings Trump has held with association representatives since becoming president in January. For the occasion, ATA brought its "image truck"—named Interstate One—which has the association logo emblazoned on the cab.
One of the topics for discussion was the Affordable Care Act, which Spear called "just plain unaffordable" in a statement after the meeting.
"Replacing this law will help trucking employees, their families and our customers by lowering insurance costs, decrease mandates, liabilities and administrative burdens, and provide access to quality care and patient choice," Spear said.
Trump referred to the legislative battle to replace the ACA in prepared remarks made at the event. He blamed the reluctance to approve a GOP health care bill as being the result of "politics" rather than any concerns about the legislation.
"After we repeal and replace Obamacare, we're going to do everything we can to make sure truckers stay busy moving American goods made by American companies and workers," Trump said.
At one point Trump climbed into the cab of Interstate One and honked the horn, leading to many jokes on social media and in mainstream news outlets. The New York Post ran a photo of the president in the truck on its front page with the headline "MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY," referring to his ultimatum to Republican lawmakers to pass the GOP health care bill or risk losing their seats in the next elections. http://bit.ly/2nQ7WIE
