One buzz may be as good as another, but the substances that get you there should be regulated the same.
That seems to be the message from the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America, which announced last night that it will encourage Congress to allow states to legalize marijuana as long as they control sales and use in a similar fashion to alcohol. WSWA says it is the "first and only" alcoholic beverage association to support states' rights to legalize cannabis.
Making the announcement on the Fox Business network last night, WSWA Acting Executive Vice President Dawson Hobbs said the group's members are not getting into the marijuana production business, just advocating for a level playing field.
In a statement, WSWA outlined principles for marijuana regulation.
"Legalization should include regulations that set age restrictions on buyers, as well as license and regulate the supply chain of cannabis, including growers, distributors, retailers and testing laboratories," the statement said.
Restrictions proposed by WSWA include:
• A minimum age of 21 for purchase, possession and use, along with penalties for providing cannabis to minors
• Establishment of DUI standards
• Limits on the hours and days of pot sales, similar to limits on alcohol sales
• Tax collection and enforcement
• Advertising restrictions to discourage underage access and promote responsible consumption
• Penalties for licensee violations on par with the state's alcohol regulations.
