Forever humbled by a turkey

Joel Brandenberger has participated in every White House pardon of a turkey since 1991, but the president of the National Turkey Federation doesn't let it go to his head. He remembers all too well his first experience with the Thanksgiving tradition. Brandenberger's then-new legislative affairs job included "assistant bird handler" duties. After President George H.W. Bush finished his remarks, it came time for Brandenberger to lift the large fowl onto a table. The bird got away and crashed harmlessly to the ground, white feathers flying.
