Red Cross may rent vacant offices to generate revenue

The American Red Cross has relocated some staffers from its downtown Washington, D.C. headquarters to a satellite office near Dulles, Va. Surgeons group building a new home on the Hill

The American College of Surgeons’ government relations team is planning to leave their cramped Georgetown offices and move closer to Capitol Hill. ACS broke ground at 20 F Street NW on May 9 and the new building is expected to be ready for tenants by the first quarter of 2010. ACS plans to occupy the top floor and use a rooftop deck, which has views of the Capitol, for its own events and for rental.

Vermont law creates charity hybrid that turns a profit

Charitable groups see promise—and profits—in a new Vermont law that enables tax-exempt groups to attract and generate private capital for their initiatives. The law, signed April 30 by Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, essentially creates a low-profit, limited liability corporation, or an L3C, with charitable goals that is also allowed to generate a small profit. Vermont’s Secretary of State website describes the new business entity as a “cross between a nonprofit organization and a for-profit corporation.”
