Recessionary impact on associations worsens in 2009

The effect of the recession on associations has been more significant in 2009 than 2008, with budget cuts and hiring freezes broader in the current year, according to findings released this month. Membership retention and annual meeting attendance were also down in the first six months of 2009, according to a midyear economic impact report on associations conducted by McKinley Marketing.

Two travel organizations open merger talks, once again

Just two months after putting the brakes on a merger with the National Business Travel Association, the Association of Corporate Travel Executives has come back to the table with a new proposal. New terms call for two years of co-branding before creating a new name for the organization and an interim board for the same period, with each group providing five members. Thereafter, a new board will be elected with a guarantee for non-U.S. seats, a critical point for ACTE since 60 percent of its 2,500 members are based outside the U.S.

Veterans’ advocate takes helm of now-unified ASAE board

Longtime ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership member Velma R. Hart, the chief financial officer of Lanham, Md.-based veterans advocacy organization AMVETS, told CEO Update she is “humbled beyond measure” to be named the next chair of ASAE’s newly meshed board of directors, a position she assumed Aug. 18.
