NFL union names replacement to late Gene Upshaw

The National Football League Players Association March 15 named DeMaurice Smith as the group’s executive director, effective immediately. Smith replaces Pro Football Hall of Fame member Gene Upshaw, who led the union for 25 years until his death in August.

Government Relations Dan Brenner left the National Cable & Telecommunications Association Feb. 28 to join law firm Hogan & Hartson as a partner in the telecommunications, media and entertainment practice. NCTA has started a search for a replacement for Brenner as senior vice president for law and public policy. AARP selects Howard University trustee as its CEO

A. Barry Rand, a former CEO at Avis and an executive with Xerox Corp. who worked his way up the corporate ladder over 30 years with the company, has been chosen as the next CEO of AARP. Heidrick & Struggles, an executive search firm with Washington area offices, completed the CEO search. Rand succeeds CEO William Novelli, who announced two years ago that he would retire in 2010. Novelli became CEO of AARP in 2001.

Anti-travel rhetoric ignites travel, meetings industry

Travel and hotel industry leaders are lashing back at U.S. officials who have criticized meetings, business trips and conventions as little more than corporate junkets. The sector, which includes convention and visitors bureaus, airlines and national hotel chains, is taking offense to comments like the one President Obama made to an Indiana crowd in February, when he said, “You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers’ dime.”
