The Fertilizer Institute seeks to explain soaring charges to concerned agriculture and regulatory groups, as well as lawmakers and the public As American farmers struggled this spring to cope with rising costs on several fronts, the nations fertilizer producers are trying to explain why their product is costing more in hopes of staving off government intervention. The price for fertilizer hit a record high in May when farmers paid 69 percent more than the year before, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
