A Washington D.C.-based advocacy group has filed a rulemaking petition with the Internal Revenue Service asking for review of the section of tax code applying to trade associations, saying certain organizations are using it to funnel so-called "dark money" into political campaigns. In a statement, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said the 501(c)(6) tax exemptions "increasingly are serving as vehicles for wealthy groups and individuals to funnel anonymous or ‘dark' money to other tax-exempt organizations to influence elections.
