As Congress returns from summer recess and the Labor Day weekend, lawmakers can expect visits from just a few groups holding fly-ins this week. The fall fly-in season picks up next week, with more than a dozen groups visiting Washington, D.C.
Hundreds of lawmakers and Hill staffers are expected at the Science and Technology Fair hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International in the Cannon House Office Building Thursday. The fair will highlight the robotic technology behind vehicles for land, sea and air. Flying drones are capturing most of the headlines, and controversy. About 70 AUVSI members will participate in the fly-in and representatives from about 25 companies will be at the technology fair.
About 50 business leaders will meet with lawmakers Wednesday, as part of the Hardwood Federation's fall fly-in. Key issues: federal forest management reform, the impact of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designating the Northern Long Eared Bat as threatened, and seeking official recognition of biomass as a carbon neutral fuel.
The International Facility Management Association is also holding its Advocacy Day and Public Policy Forum this week. Among IFMA's issues: energy efficiency standards for new federal buildings.
