A new industry organization focused on the market for government IT services is launching soon. Federal News Radio reported Monday that Amazon Web Services is the driving force behind the new group, named the Alliance for Digital Innovation.
"Many in the federal contractor community believe (ADI) will be made up primarily of Amazon partners and resellers," the news story said. Rich Beutel, a former U.S. House staffer who has lobbied for Amazon, will lead ADI. The story said that multiple emails to Amazon Web Services and to Beutel seeking comment were not returned.
Federal News Radio quoted from a one-page brochure it had obtained for the new group: "The Alliance for Digital Innovation (ADI) is a coalition of customer-focused commercial companies helping to shape government IT modernization efforts through advocacy and thought leadership efforts."
Amazon belongs to many IT-related trade associations that focus all or in part on doing business with the federal, state or local government agencies, including the Professional Services Council, TechNet and the IT Alliance for Public Sector (a division of the Information Technology Industry Council).
As to why Amazon would be starting a new trade group: One anonymous source quoted in the story said that government vendors need to be collaborative on many policy issues, but Amazon "doesn't play well with others."
