The American Geosciences Institute announced Tuesday a restructuring of the organization that resulted in staff reductions and streamlining of its functions.

The Alexandria, Va.-based AGI was founded in 1948 as a network of associations representing geoscientists. The organization reported nearly $6.6 million in revenue and 82 staff on its 2016 tax forms, the latest available.

AGI issued a statement about the restructuring, acknowledging it is implementing staff reductions, but did not provide details about how many positions were being cut or what form the streamlining would take. Among the cuts noted by social media users was the closure of Earth magazine, a monthly magazine covering geoscience news.

"AGI has proudly provided a unified voice for the geoscience community for more than 70 years," AGI Executive Director Allyson K. Anderson Book said. "As we look to the future along with our member organizations across the geosciences, we understand that emerging demands are challenging us to be willing to change and respond in new ways."

AGI elected President Rodney Ewing said the changes are meant to provide "a strong, more resilient future for the geosciences tomorrow."
