Five prominent Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters have formed a new trade association for mixed martial arts athletes, ESPN reported.
The Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association was formed to "fight for the rights" of MMA fighters and alter the UFC's "decade plus outrageous treatment of its athletes," according to a statement from the new organization. UFC is the largest MMA promotion company in the U.S.
The new association will push for an increase in revenue share from the UFC and urge the company to provide insurance and pension packages to athletes.
MMAAA is a trade association rather than a union because UFC classifies fighters as independent contractors rather than employees, ESPN reported. A separate organization named the Professional Fighters Association was launched in August with the goal of unionizing fighters. http://es.pn/2gccL7J
