Two associations have announced separate charitable donations to both victims of the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas and communities hit by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
The American Gaming Association said Tuesday the group would donate $100,000 to a fund set up for victims of Sunday's Las Vegas shooting that left 59 people dead and more than 500 injured. Also on Tuesday, PMMI—The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies announced a fundraising effort for hurricane victims had raised more than $325,000.
AGA—which represents casinos—kicked off its annual conference in Las Vegas one day after the shooting. In a statement, association CEO Geoff Freeman announced the $100,000 donation to the Las Vegas Victims' Fund on the crowdfunding site GoFundMe and he encouraged others to do the same. http://bit.ly/2fJx7q9
"Today is a difficult day—and there are more questions than answers regarding this shocking tragedy," Freeman said. "Las Vegas is the beating heart of our industry. AGA and the entire casino gaming industry is focused on helping the Las Vegas community recover."
PMMI started raising funds for American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts shortly after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August. The group expanded the scope of its fundraising efforts following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The association matched up to $100,000 in donations made through an online crowdfunding campaign. It also sought donations at its PACK EXPO Las Vegas conference, which concluded a few days before Sunday's shooting.
"The generosity of PACK EXPO attendees and exhibitors was truly inspirational," PMMI CEO Chuck Yuska said in a statement. "Ours is an industry that has consistently risen to the occasion to help others in times of need."
