CEO DATELINE — Built environment groups sign industry diversity pledge

Twenty organizations have joined the National Institute of Building Sciences in signing a pledge to support greater diversity in the building industry.

"The built environment workforce is facing shortages and improving DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) is the best solution," Lakisha A. Woods, CEO of NIBS, said in a statement yesterday. "These specific actions will help develop a diverse leadership pipeline."
The organizations agreed to three primary goals, according to the NIBS statement: Building diverse staff and volunteer leadership teams, sharing best practices and promoting the effort among their membership.
The organizations include the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers; Arc Skoru Inc.; ASTM International; BOMA International; ConnexFM; Construction Specifications Institute; Design-Build Institute of America; Energy & Environmental Building Alliance; Green Building Initiative; Green Business Certification Inc.; Institute of Real Estate Management; Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety; International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants; Modular Building Institute; NAREIM (National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers); New Buildings Institute; RICS (a global standards organization for building surveying); and the U.S. Green Building Council, according to NIBS.
In addition, NIBS announced that it has signed the PwC CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion pledge, joining 2,000 CEOs. The pledge aims to cultivate trusting workplaces that can have complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations, implement or expand unconscious bias education and share best and unsuccessful practices.
