Sixteen business groups are taking the Environmental Protection Agency to court over a new rule requiring states to cut greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2030.
The groups join 24 states in challenging the emission limits in court. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is among the organizations participating in the lawsuit, calling the EPA rule "unlawful and a bad deal for America."
"It will drive up electricity costs for businesses, consumers and families, impose tens of billions in annual compliance costs, and reduce our nation's global competitiveness—without any significant reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions," Chamber CEO Tom Donohue said.
The National Association of Manufacturers also is involved in the lawsuit. The association says EPA exceeded its authority in enacting the new rule.
"Manufacturers can't sit by while this administration makes it increasingly difficult to make things and create jobs in the United States, especially at a time when the regulatory weight borne by manufacturers is heavier than ever," said Linda Kelly, senior vice president and general counsel for NAM.
EPA claims it has the authority to enact the rule under the Clean Air Act, the Associated Press reported. http://fxn.ws/1WdwDtM
The business groups that have joined the lawsuit are American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, National Federation of Independent Business, American Chemistry Council, American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute, American Foundry Society, American Forest & Paper Association, American Iron and Steel Institute, American Wood Council, Brick Industry Association, Electricity Consumers Resource Council, Lignite Energy Council, National Lime Association, National Oilseed Processors Association and Portland Cement Association.
