The world's largest candy makers have agreed to reduce the calories in many of their products as part of a larger effort to encourage consumers to make healthy eating choices, the National Confectioners Association announced Thursday.
The new commitment by NCA members was made in cooperation with Partnership for a Healthier America, a nonprofit group with the mission of reducing childhood obesity in the U.S. The participating companies have pledged that half of their individually wrapped products would be available in sizes containing 200 calories or less per pack by 2022.
"Chocolate and candy have always been a treat, and this is a big commitment by the participating companies to keep it that way," NCA CEO John Downs said. "This is the first step on our journey to recruit other companies to join us as we work to help consumers manage their sugar intake and ensure they feel empowered to make informed choices."
Participating companies are Mars Chocolate North America; Wm. Wrigley Jr.; Nestlé USA; Ferrara Candy Co; Ferrero USA; Lindt & Sprüngli; Ghirardelli Chocolate Co.; and Russell Stover Candies. http://bit.ly/2qAinS6
In related news, NACS—The Association for Convenience & Fuel Retailing announced the same day that the group's members had partnered with PHA to make healthier food options more visible in stores.
As part of the agreement, NACS will provide resources to members to help determine how they can carry additional healthier choices, as well as provide promotional materials related to Drink Up, PHA's marketing campaign to encourage water consumption.
NACS also will provide healthier catering options at its events, including the NACS Show.
"The commitment furthers the goals of NACS and our members to make a positive impact in the communities we serve, whether through charitable giving programs or helping to equip our members to truly make the healthy choice the convenient choice," NACS CEO Henry Armour said. http://bit.ly/2ra8uaE
