U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta named 20 people to a new task force on apprenticeships Monday, including seven association CEOs.
The group will identify strategies and proposals to promote apprenticeships. President Donald Trump issued an executive order in June aimed at moving standard setting for government-funded apprenticeship programs to third parties, such as associations and unions.
The order also included doubling federal funding for apprenticeships to $200 million a year, and establishing the task force.
The 20 appointees represent associations, corporations, unions, public officials and advocates.
Association CEOs are Michael Bellaman, Associated Builders and Contractors; Joshua Bolten, Business Roundtable; Walter Bumphus, American Association of Community Colleges; Tom Donohue, U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Katherine Lugar, American Hotel and Lodging Association, Dawn Sweeney, National Restaurant Association and Jay Timmons, National Association of Manufacturers.
The task force also includes Montez King, executive director of the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, and Mark Rosenberg, a board member of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.
"We look forward to streamlining and expanding the apprenticeship program to open additional pathways to achieve the American Dream," Sweeney said in a statement.
The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and the American Hotel and Lodging Association were awarded a $1.8 million contract from the U.S. Department of Labor last year to develop an apprenticeship program. Under the contract, at least 450 people will be placed in paid apprenticeships in the hospitality industry.
