The Federal Communication Commission has unveiled a new labeling system to better inform consumers when shopping for Internet services, but the main trade group presenting mobile carriers says the effort is unnecessary.
The labeling system is modeled after the nutrition labels found on food packaging. The difference is that instead of including information about calories or daily allowance of vitamins, broadband labels include facts such as pricing and data caps.
"These labels provide consumers clarity about the broadband service they are purchasing, not only helping them to make more informed choices but also preventing surprises when the first bill arrives," FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said. http://fcc.us/1SAtAEy
CTIA-The Wireless Association isn't a fan of the new labels. In a short statement, the association said members already disclose information about their products as part of the trade group's "Consumer Code for Wireless Service," a voluntary agreement that has been in place since 2003.
"The competitive nature of the wireless broadband market does more for consumers than regulation can hope to achieve," CTIA said. http://bit.ly/23hjfoh
