A task force charged with developing a plan for restructuring the Credit Union National Association has released its recommendations, but CUNA's board of directors recently rejected many of them, industry news site Credit Union Times reported.
The CUNA System Structure and Governance Task Force was formed last year to review and suggest a number of changes to the association's governance and structure. The credit union industry is in the midst of a major wave of consolidation, and part of the task force's mission was to generate changes that will help CUNA adjust.
CUNA requires members to belong not only to the association, but to one of 42 state and regional leagues throughout the country. In a report released in September, the task force recommended CUNA decouple association membership from league membership so credit unions could belong to only one, if they choose.
CUNA board members announced Friday they had voted down the proposal.
"The board believes that by working together, CUNA and the leagues are best able to serve credit unions, whether it's through advocacy or member services," CUNA Board Chair Susan Streifel told Credit Union Times. "CUNA is dedicated to changing and evolving. At this juncture the board believes that the current membership structure is optimal."
The task force also suggested the board be whittled down from 24 directors to 15, pointing to the shrinking number of credit unions. Again, the board rejected the idea, saying it believes the current size is efficient and reflects the diversity within the industry.
The board also passed on a third recommendation calling for changes to CUNA's advocacy operations. However, the board said it has taken steps to ensure the association's advocacy committee better serves member needs. http://bit.ly/1PkiiE6
