The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has lobbied for positions on tobacco policy and climate change that directly contradict the public positions of many of the companies on its board of directors, according to a new report released by eight Democratic senators.
The 55-page report compared the policy statements of 108 private-sector members on the Chamber's board with the business organization's advocacy efforts. The senators found while most of the companies have adopted "anti-tobacco and pro-climate positions," the Chamber has lobbied against stricter greenhouse gas regulations and has fought international efforts to warn consumers about the dangers of tobacco. (The latter is based mostly on journalism the Chamber has disputed in the past.)
"The findings in this report raise serious questions about the Chamber's credibility and its actions on tobacco and climate policy, and indicate that the Chamber does not accurately represent the positions, input, and knowledge of its membership," the senators concluded.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sen. Barbara Boxer of California and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont were among the senators who issued the report. http://1.usa.gov/1UAQL2p
When contacted by Politico, Chamber spokeswoman Blair Latoff Holmes called the report an "egregiously false" partisan line of attack.
"Perhaps if these senators put as much energy into fostering pro-job, pro-growth policies as they are into producing baseless ‘reports' about groups whose mission is to do just that—and whose opinions they politically disagree with—the country would see more positive economic growth," she told the publication. http://politi.co/1W1ri7v
