Campbell Soup Company has joined a new association for plant-based foods, further separating itself from long-established trade groups.
Campbell announced in July it would leave the Grocery Manufacturers Association by the end of the year, saying the organization no longer aligned with its principles. The company supports identifying genetically modified ingredients on product labels, which GMA has fought.
Global giant Nestlé is also leaving GMA by the end of the year.
Campbell is the first major food company to join the Plant Based Foods Association. The trade group launched in March 2016 with 23 companies and now says it now has more than 80 members.
"We are thrilled to have Campbell join our membership," PBFA Executive Director Michele Simon said in a news statement. "With their leadership, the plant-based foods sector is certain to grow even faster. We look forward to a long and productive partnership." http://bit.ly/2iP1yQG
Campbell is trying to remake itself by offering more packaged fresh and refrigerated products, including those labeled organic. It recently launched a new line of beverages made from pea protein, calling them a "nutritious alternative milk."
PBFA has opposed earlier efforts by the dairy industry to prevent plant-based products from using the word milk on their labels.
