The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. has filed paperwork to put two initiatives on Colorado's November ballot that would allow grocery stores there to sell liquor.
The two ballot measures are in response to a separate measure that would allow the stores to sell full-strength beer and wine, according to business publication BizWest. Colorado currently does not allow grocery stores to sell most alcoholic beverages, and as a result, many stores in the state have liquor stores next door.
"There's going to be several hundred liquor stores that will be closing up if only beer and wine go into grocery stores, and that's going to put us at a huge disadvantage from a competitive standpoint," Distilled Spirits Council Vice President Dale Szyndrowski told the publication.
One initiative would simply allow stores to sell liquor. The other ballot measure is a compromise initiative that would allow any grocery or liquor store owner to have up to 10 liquor licenses instead of the one they are allowed now.
The Distilled Spirits Council needs to gather 98,000 signatures by August to put either initiative on the November ballot. http://bit.ly/1RnsL1V
