The National Shooting Sports Federation is accusing YouTube of infringing on both free speech and the right to bear arms by recently announcing it would place new restrictions on videos featuring guns.
YouTube will soon ban videos intended to sell firearms or firearms accessories, the company said on its website. It will also ban videos on how to manufacture firearms and ammunition as well as videos showing people how to create or install silencers and high capacity magazines. http://bit.ly/2pyVtHu
NSSF responded to the announcement in a March 21 statement on its blog. The group called YouTube's decision "troubling" and said the new policy would give political activists a new tool to generate "manufactured outrage" by flooding gun videos with complaints.
"Both First and Second Amendment rights are essential to the liberty we enjoy as American citizens," NSSF said. "In a very real sense, the de facto curtailment of First Amendment right of its firearm-related business users, YouTube is edging toward simultaneously infringing upon the Second Amendment rights of the customers of these affected businesses."
NSSF also accused Facebook of engaging in similar behavior by repeatedly shutting down the pages of firearms retailers that were following the company's rules. http://bit.ly/2pz8mSb
