Associations often use their Washington fly-ins as opportunities to honor both their members and members of Congress, and this week is no exception. Several associations will host award receptions and dinners in conjunction with their lobby day events.
Former presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) will receive the Innovation Policy Ninja Award from the Consumer Technology Association. CTA CEO Gary Shapiro, who had endorsed Rubio for the GOP nomination, said the senator supported innovation issues before they became mainstream. The annual Digital Patriots Dinner on Wednesday will also honor Sen. Corey Booker (D-N.J.) and Rep. Frank Farenthold (R-Tex.) for supporting policies to advance innovation.
On Tuesday, CTA will hold CES on the Hill, with more than two dozen companies exhibiting their products and technologies, from AT&T to Snapchat and Ford and Toyota.
The American Council of Engineering Companies is bringing more than 1,000 people to Washington for its Annual Convention and Legislative Summit, which includes the "Academy Awards" of the engineering industry. The black-tie gala on Tuesday will recognize achievements from around the world.
During Capitol Hill visits Tuesday and Wednesday, ACEC members will advocate for a bipartisan energy program and funding for transportation projects.
The American Bar Association holds its Justice Awards reception and dinner Tuesday at the National Museum of the American Indian. Honorees are Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Corey Booker (D-N.J.) and Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio). On Wednesday, ABA members will lobby on funding for the Legal Services Corporation and federal sentencing reform.
Other groups holding fly-ins and conferences in Washington, D.C., this week include the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association, Automotive Recyclers Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Beverage Association. Three groups will participate in the Supermarket Industry Fly-In—the Food Marketing Institute, National Grocers Association and Food Industry Association Executives.
