Congress has just a few days to finish must-pass legislation before a five-week summer break, but lawmakers will also hear from a few associations visiting Capitol Hill this week.
Buses will run continuously Wednesday to shuttle advocates for drug courts, DWI courts and veterans treatment courts between the Hill and the Gaylord Resort at National Harbor in Maryland, where both the 21st annual training conference of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals and the 2015 Vet Court Con are being held.
About 5,000 people will attend the July 27-30 conferences, including prosecutors, defense attorneys, police and probation officers and drug court graduates and their families. About 1,000 people are expected to board the shuttle buses to ask Congress for more funding for drug courts as an alternative to prison.
Also on Wednesday, about 150 people are expected to hit the Hill for the Retail Advocates Summit, organized by the National Retail Federation. Policy and training sessions Tuesday will include an update on efforts by states to regulate the scheduling of employees.
The National Council for Independent Living is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act at its annual conference. On Tuesday, attendees will march from the Grand Hyatt on H Street Northwest to the U.S. Capitol, where they will hold a rally before visiting congressional offices.
