The landscape and lawn care industry will carry on an old tradition with a new name. About 400 volunteers with the National Association of Landscape Professionals (which changed its name April 1 from the Professional Landcare Network or PLANET) are at Arlington National Cemetery today. Their tasks include mulching, pruning, planting and installing lightning protection for trees. The first, much smaller, event was held in 1997.
On Tuesday, NALP members visit congressional offices. Legislative issues include immigration reform and health care for seasonal employees.
The National Automated Merchandising Association is bringing more than 200 people from 34 states to Washington, D.C., for its first full-fledged fly-in. The group will emphasize the industry's commitment to nutrition and "better-for-you" options. A congressional reception Wednesday will showcase high-tech vending machines.
Also on Wednesday, the North American Meat Institute will host the Annual Hot Dog Lunch on Capitol Hill in celebration of National Hot Dog Month. More than 1,000 people are expected to consume more than 3,500 hot dog and sausage products. Former baseball stars Tony Perez, Bill Buckner and Mookie Wilson will attend.
The American Association of Airport Executives and Airports Council International-North America hold their annual legislative event, renamed the Airport Summer Fly-In, today and Tuesday.
Other groups holding fly-ins or legislative events this week include National Association of Plan Advisors, SIGMA—America's Leading Fuel Marketers, National Indian Gaming Association, American Nurses Association and the National Federation of Independent Business.
