The Association of Food Journalists is closing its doors after 46 years as newsrooms across the country struggle to stay open, New York Magazine reported.

AFJ is a professional organization dedicated to preserving and perpetuating responsible food journalism across media platforms, according to the group's website. In the past, the group raised revenue through member dues, fees for contest entries and regular conferences, but all those sources of funding have dried up as newspapers lost advertising dollars to the internet.
"To say (AFJ) was run on a shoestring budget is a stretch: We earlier this year laid off our part-time executive director because we could no longer afford the expense," AFJ board president Hanna Raskin wrote in a letter to members.
New York Magazine noted AFJ was known for its thorough ethics code, which lays out food-specific guidelines on everything from comped meals to best reviewing practices. The group's board hopes the guidelines will "live on for as long as they're useful."
