The American Helicopter Society International will adopt the organization's former tagline "Vertical Flight Society" as its new name, starting in 2019.
AHS is an Alexandria, Va.-based nonprofit technical society for engineers and other professionals specializing in helicopters and other vertical flight technology. It was founded in 1943 and later added the tagline "The Vertical Flight Society" in 1997.
In recent years the group has used the tagline "The Vertical Flight Technical Society," but its members decided the earlier tagline more easily rolled off the tongue, Executive Director Mike Hirschberg wrote in an article describing the rebranding on the group's website.
"Each of the five major helicopter manufacturers has now dropped the word ‘helicopter' from its brand name," Hirschberg said, explaining the reason for dropping the term from the group's name. "And each is currently developing non-helicopter VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft for the future, including advanced tiltrotors."
AHS reported $1.8 million in revenue in its most recent tax filings. The group should not be confused with Helicopter Association International, which is also in Alexandria. http://bit.ly/2JaobXp
