The Outdoor Industry Association has released a report analyzing the economic impact of its industry for each of the country's 435 congressional districts, with the group using the findings to urge lawmakers to take more steps to protect public lands.
The report—the first of its kind for OIA—concluded that the outdoor recreation industry supports 7.6 million jobs nationwide and generates billions of dollars in spending on outdoor products. Alaska was the largest beneficiary in spending while Oregon was home to the most outdoor industry jobs.
Internet users can further break down the figures on the OIA website by accessing the economic impact on specific congressional districts.
"These reports show that all districts have something to gain when our federal and local policymakers support our public lands and waters and invest in outdoor recreation," OIA Executive Director Amy Roberts said.
The outdoor recreation industry has become more vocal in recent years in its opposition to opening more public lands to development and natural resource extraction. Among OIA's tactics has been to show lawmakers that outdoor recreation can be a major job generator for rural communities. https://prn.to/2HHlpJL
