The $275 million-revenue Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers donated $2.5 million to a pro-Trump dark money group last year, according to tax documents. The information was first reported by Andrew Perez of MapLight.
PhRMA's 2017 IRS Form 990 shows the contribution, which represented more than 10 percent of the revenue of 501(c)(4) group America First Policies.
An analysis of MapLight's findings by investigative news service Capital & Main noted that President Donald Trump has backed off a campaign promise to reduce drug prices and allow Medicare to negotiate prices.
Instead, Trump opposed Medicare price negotiation after meeting with drug company executives in January 2017, Capital & Main noted. In November 2017, Trump nominated former pharmaceutical company executive Alex Azar to head the department of Health and Human Services.
America First Policies was founded in January 2017 by several Trump aides, including Brad Parscale, who now manages Trump's 2020 reelection campaign.
