Many of this week's lobby day advocates are flying into Washington, D.C., to talk about transportation. More than 600 leaders are convening for The American Public Transportation Association's legislative conference. APTA reported on Monday that Americans took 10.8 billion trips on public transportation in 2014, the highest annual ridership in 58 years.
Transportation will also be on the minds of people attending the Congressional City Conference, sponsored by the National League of Cities. The charge to Capitol Hill Wednesday includes a focus on local transportation priorities, and finally getting a long-term surface transportation bill passed.
President Barak Obama was scheduled to speak to the group Monday morning.
Pedal power will be front and center for the League of American Bicyclists at the National Bike Summit and National Forum on Women and Bicycling. Lobby Day is Thursday and on Friday morning the group holds a memorial ride in honor of Jim Oberstar; the late Minnesota Democrat was a longtime leader of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
The American Public Power Association holds its 2015 Legislative Rally to discuss EPA regulations, tax-exempt financing and cyber security among other topics. Congressional meetings are Wednesday.
More than 4,000 people are expected at the Washington Convention Center for the Credit Union National Association' Governmental Affairs Conference. Capitol Hill visits are Wednesday and Thursday.
Medical groups will be on the Hill again, including the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of General Internal Medicine.
