BIO announced Jan. 19 that it had a new leadership team and organizational structure and that "some staff reductions were made to align the organization for the new strategic direction." CEO Michelle McMurry-Heath joined the biotechnology association in June 2020, succeeding former Republican Rep. Jim Greenwood as the organization's top executive.
Citing an anonymous source, Inside Health Policy reported as many as 40 people were laid off as part of an organizational restructuring. Several layoffs were due to BIO being forced to hold conventions online because of the pandemic. No lobbyists were let go. The organization reported that it had employed 222 people during 2019 as part of its tax filing for the year.
BIO recently hired Melissa von Stauffenberg as chief marketing officer. The Jan. 19 announcement said the group also planned to add a new COO. The announcement also noted that BIO expects to offer virtual-only events throughout most of 2021.
