Credit Union National Association is recovering its computer systems after being targeted by a ransomware attack, the news site TechCrunch reported Wednesday.
CUNA's systems were knocked offline Monday as a result of ransomware, an anonymous source in the organization told TechCrunch. The type of ransomware was not immediately known.
A banner on CUNA's website attributed the outage as being due to "technical issues." Association spokeswoman Vicky Christner did not confirm a ransomware attack but said the organization was addressing a "cyber incident." She noted CUNA has no reason to believe that any data in its systems was accessed.
Ransomware is malicious software that locks up computer systems until a ransom is paid, sometimes in the form of Bitcoin or other digital currencies. The incident came just a month after CUNA hosted a simulated ransomware attack aimed at helping credit unions defend against the problem, according to TechCrunch. https://tcrn.ch/2GZtaev
