At least one U.S. senator has had to explain that the $50 campaign donation she received from an "NRA" employee was from a staffer at the National Restaurant Association and not the National Rifle Association, MSNBC recently reported.
Both groups share the acronym NRA. Criticism of the National Rifle Association has increased following the Feb. 14 mass shooting at the Florida high school that killed 17 students and adults, with several businesses cutting ties with the group since then. However, not all people realize that "NRA" can also mean the National Restaurant Association.
"Today I learned NRA also is the national restaurant association," said one Twitter user cited by MSNBC. Other social media users also were confused by the identical acronyms.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a Democratic senator for Illinois who supports greater gun control, recently took to Twitter to explain to constituents that a $50 donation she received from an NRA employee in February was from the restaurant association, not the rifle association.
"Every once in a while this happens," a National Restaurant Association spokeswoman told the news channel. http://cnb.cx/2tqhTjE
